Adopting is one of the best things you can do.

When you adopt, you’re not just giving a deserving dog a home. You’re also reducing the demand for puppy mills and other industrial-scale breeding operations that put profit before animal welfare.

When circumstances are such that you aren't able to adopt, be sure to seek out reputable, fully licensed and inspected breeders. They shouldn’t require any money from you to visit them in-person. They should be more than happy to show you where the puppy was born and raised. They should have the puppy and parents on-site for you to meet in-person. They should be more than happy to share with you any pertinent information. For example; proof of licensing and inspection records, vaccination and worming records, DNA/OFA test results, health warranties, pedigrees, registration papers, and so on.

A reputable breeder will never require any type of commitment or payment from you before you’ve had the oppertunity to do your due diligence. This includes getting to meet them, the puppy, and the puppy’s parents. If they claim to use a Guardian Home, they should allow you to visit there as well.

Beware of fake Guardian Homes and fake breeders. The Los Angeles Times did an extensive two year long investigation, which promted California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign off on new legislation effective Janurary 1, 2026.
